ABOUT HEMATECH
Hematech, Inc. was founded in 1998 in Amherst, Massachusetts with the idea to produce fully human antibodies in genetically engineered cattle. It was shortly after the founding of the company that a collaboration was established with what was then the Pharmaceutical Division of Kirin Brewery in Japan. Hematech and Kirin consolidated their transgenic bovine research programs to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2002. In 2005, Hematech was purchased by Kirin and became a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2007, the Pharmaceutical Division of Kirin Brewery spun out as Kirin Pharma. In 2008, Kirin Pharma merged with Kyowa Hakko Kogyo to form Kyowa Hakko Kirin. Hematech continues as a wholly owned subsidiary of Kyowa Hakko Kirin and occupies over 20,000 sq. ft. of laboratory and office space in the Sioux Falls Technology Park.
In 2003, Hematech formed a joint venture with Trans Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa. Trans Ova is one of the world's largest bovine embryo transfer companies and has extensive experience in managing cloned and genetically engineered livestock species. The Hematech/Trans Ova Joint Venture was formed to manage all of Hematech's animal needs, including work at Hematech's Research Development Center located near Sioux Center, Iowa.
Currently, Hematech has three research programs: Molecular Genetics and Immunology (MGI), Vaccinology and Antibody Characterization (VAC) and Antigen and Antibody Production (AAP). Hematech also has extensive Regulatory Compliance programs, Veterinary Services, Animal Management and Quality Assurance. Hematech's research programs are best known for their successes in producing the first transchromosomic and gene targeted cattle. |
